Quick answer

Must-pack essentials:

  • 2 to 3 swimsuits
  • reef-safe sunscreen
  • day bag for port days
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • one outfit for each formal or elegant night
  • medications in original bottles
  • passport (recommended even for closed-loop cruises)
  • refillable water bottle
  • cruise-approved power strip (cabins have limited outlets)

Do not pack: an iron or steamer (typically prohibited), a full-size hair dryer (usually provided), too many formal outfits.

Documents and money

Pack these in your carry-on, not checked luggage:

  • passport (or required ID)
  • cruise documents and boarding pass
  • travel protection details
  • credit cards and a small amount of cash for ports
  • any prescriptions

Clothing: how much is enough?

A simple rule: one daytime outfit per day, one evening outfit per night, and 1 to 2 “dress up” looks (depending on your sailing).

Shoes that actually matter

  • broken-in walking shoes
  • sandals or flip-flops
  • water shoes if you will do rocky beaches or water excursions
  • dress shoes only if you plan to dress up

Toiletries and health

Bring sunscreen and after-sun aloe, motion sickness remedies if you are prone, basic first aid items (band-aids, pain relief), and any specialty skincare you prefer.

Tech and small items that save you

  • cruise-approved power strip
  • portable charger
  • lanyard or card holder for ship card
  • waterproof phone pouch (optional)

FAQs

Do I need a passport for a Caribbean cruise?

Some itineraries allow other documents, but I recommend a passport for flexibility if plans change.

How many swimsuits should I bring?

Two to three is ideal so one can dry while you wear the other.

Can I bring an iron on a cruise?

Usually no. Most cruise lines prohibit irons and steamers.

Next step

If you tell me your cruise line and sailing length, I can tailor this list to your ship’s dress code, your ports and excursion plans, and your family’s needs.
