The Most Important Decision

Which Island Is Right for You?

This is the single question that determines whether your Hawaii trip is incredible or just okay. Each island has a completely different character. Here's my honest take on each one.

Maui

Most Popular

The ideal balance of natural beauty, resort luxury, and things to do. Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise, Kaanapali Beach, whale watching (December–April). Best for: couples, honeymooners, active families who want both adventure and beach time.

Best resorts: Four Seasons Maui, Grand Wailea, Andaz Maui

Oahu

Most Diverse

Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, North Shore surfing, Diamond Head, and Aulani Disney Resort. Most accessible from DFW with the most direct flights. Best for: first-time Hawaii visitors, families with kids, history buffs, and anyone wanting city energy alongside the beach.

Best resorts: Aulani Disney, Turtle Bay, Royal Hawaiian

Kauai

Most Beautiful

The "Garden Isle" is Hawaii's most dramatic — Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Less developed, quieter, and more intimate. Best for: couples seeking seclusion, adventure travelers, photographers, and return Hawaii visitors.

Best resorts: Grand Hyatt Kauai, Koloa Landing, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

Big Island

Most Unique

The only place you can see active lava flows, snorkel with manta rays, and stargaze from one of the world's best observatories — all on the same trip. Best for: adventurous families, nature lovers, and travelers who want something truly different from a typical beach vacation.

Best resorts: Four Seasons Hualalai, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

Norwegian's Pride of America — Hawaii's Most Unique Cruise

Want to see multiple Hawaiian Islands without the stress of inter-island flights, hotel check-ins, and airport logistics? The Norwegian Pride of America is in a class entirely its own — and it's the only cruise that can do what no other ship in the world can.

Federal maritime law (the Jones Act) requires foreign-flagged ships to stop at a foreign port before cruising between U.S. ports. The Pride of America is American-flagged — which means it's the only cruise ship on earth that can depart Honolulu, visit all the major Hawaiian Islands, and return to Honolulu in just 7 nights. No Canada stop. No Mexico detour. Just Hawaii, start to finish.

Departs and returns to Honolulu, Oahu — fly in and fly out of the same airport

Visits Maui (Kahului & Lahaina), Hilo (Big Island), Kona (Big Island), and Kauai (Nawiliwili) — all in one week

Overnight stays in port — more time on each island than any other cruise itinerary

No foreign port requirement — 100% Hawaii, the entire time

Norwegian Freestyle Dining — eat when you want, no fixed dining times

Ask About the Pride of America

Why It's Impossible to Replicate

Every other cruise line — Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America — must comply with the Jones Act by touching a foreign port (typically Ensenada, Mexico or Vancouver, Canada) before sailing between Hawaiian ports. That requirement eats 1–2 days of a 7-night itinerary.

The Pride of America is exempt because it flies the American flag and operates under U.S. maritime law. It's been sailing this route exclusively since 2005 — and no other cruise line has matched it.

Sample 7-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 Depart Honolulu, Oahu
  • Day 2 Kahului, Maui (overnight)
  • Day 3 Kahului, Maui — Road to Hana
  • Day 4 Hilo, Big Island — Volcanoes NP
  • Day 5 Kona, Big Island — Manta ray snorkel
  • Day 6 Nawiliwili, Kauai (overnight)
  • Day 7 Kauai — Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon
  • Day 8 Return to Honolulu, Oahu

Aulani Disney Resort — Hawaii Meets Disney Magic

Aulani is Disney's Hawaii resort at Ko Olina on Oahu — and it's genuinely one of the best family resorts in the world. It's not a theme park, but it has Disney storytelling woven into every corner: character experiences, Aunty's Beach House (the best kids' club in Hawaii), a stunning lagoon pool complex, and a spa for parents who need the break.

  • Aunty's Beach House kids' club — complimentary, all ages, Disney-themed activities

  • Ko Olina lagoon beach — calm, protected swimming great for young children

  • Character dining and interactions — uniquely Hawaiian Disney characters

  • Laniwai Spa — one of the best resort spas in Hawaii

  • DVC rentals available — can make Aulani significantly more affordable

Who Aulani Is Best For

Families with Young Children

The calm lagoon beach and kids' club make it ideal for little ones who aren't ready for the chaos of a theme park.

Disney Fans Who Love Hawaii

If you love Disney but want a relaxing resort instead of a theme park, Aulani delivers the magic without the crowds.

Multi-Gen Family Trips

Grandparents, parents, and kids all find something — spa, beach, Disney characters, and some of the best Hawaiian cuisine on Oahu.

Why Expert Help Matters

Hawaii Trips Are Big Investments. Plan Them Right.

Flight Routing from DFW

Direct vs. connecting flights, inter-island hops, and how to add a second island without blowing the budget. I help you build the right routing for your itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Each Island

Rain patterns, whale season, surf season, and summer vs. shoulder season tradeoffs — the right timing can transform the experience on every island.

Multi-Island Itineraries

Want to see Maui and Kauai on one trip? I'll design the routing, pacing, and resort combinations to make it seamless without spending half your trip at airports.

Resort Location Matters

On Maui, Kaanapali vs. Wailea are 30 minutes apart but feel like different worlds. I know where to stay based on what you want to do — not just what's cheapest.

Activities & Excursion Planning

Sunrise at Haleakala, Na Pali Coast boat tours, lava field hikes, snorkeling with manta rays — I'll tell you what's genuinely worth booking in advance and what you can do on arrival.

Free. Always.

Hotels and resorts pay travel advisors directly. You never pay a planning fee — and I often have access to exclusive promotions and rate categories not available to the public.

Common Questions

Hawaii Planning FAQs

Which Hawaii island is best for families with young kids?

Oahu — especially with Aulani Disney Resort — is the top choice for families with young children. Ko Olina's calm lagoon beach is perfect for toddlers, Aunty's Beach House is one of the best kids' programs in the world, and Oahu has the most flight options from DFW. For older kids who are adventurous, Maui and the Big Island open up significantly more options.

How long should a Hawaii trip be from DFW?

At minimum, 7 nights — ideally 10–14 if you can swing it. The flight from DFW is 8–9 hours, and the time zone adjustment (Hawaii is 5–6 hours behind Texas) takes a day or two. A 7-night trip gives you enough time to actually settle in and enjoy it. If you're doing two islands, 10–12 nights is the sweet spot.

Should we do one island or two?

For first-time visitors, I almost always recommend one island done well over two islands rushed. Hawaii rewards slow travel. If you do want two islands, Maui + Big Island or Oahu + Maui are classic pairings that work well together. I'll help you build the routing so the inter-island flight doesn't eat a full day.

There's one major exception: if seeing all the islands in 7 days is your goal, Norwegian's Pride of America is the only way to do it. It's the only American-flagged cruise ship that can depart Honolulu and visit Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai — all in a single week, with no foreign port stop required. See the full details below.

What's the best time of year to visit Hawaii from Texas?

Hawaii is beautiful year-round, but April–May and September–October are the sweet spots — good weather, smaller crowds, and lower prices than summer or the holiday season. If whale watching matters to you (it should — it's spectacular), December through April is the season on Maui. Summer is the most popular time for DFW families but also the priciest and most crowded.
