Disney World vs.
Universal Orlando

Which Orlando theme park resort is right for your family in 2026? Honest, head-to-head — no sponsor ties, no hype.

Mark Ambrose Updated March 2026 8-minute read

Both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort are world-class theme park destinations within driving distance of each other in Orlando — but they are very different experiences. The right choice depends entirely on who's going, their ages, and what kind of magic your family is chasing.

Here's my honest breakdown — category by category — so you can decide with confidence instead of guessing.

The Head-to-Head Scorecard

Category 🏰 Disney World 🎢 Universal Orlando
Young Kids (under 8) Winner More limited
Tweens & Teens (9–17) Tie Tie
Thrill Rides Strong Winner
Immersive Experiences Winner Competitive
Value / Cost per Day Higher Winner
Dining & Cuisine Winner Limited variety
Harry Potter Fans Not here Winner
Star Wars Fans Winner Not here
Days Needed 5–7 days 2–3 days (4–5 w/ Epic)
First-Timer Experience Winner Better as add-on
Overall Family Trip Winner Best as add-on days

👶 Young Kids (Under 8): Disney Wins Clearly

Magic Kingdom alone has more rides without height requirements than Universal's entire park lineup. The character meet-and-greets, the princess experiences, the gentle storytelling — Disney was designed with young families in mind. Universal's marquee experiences (Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Fast & Furious) are more visually intense and require a minimum height of 48–54 inches for the best rides.

🏰 Disney World for Young Kids

  • • Peter Pan's Flight, "it's a small world," The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh — no height restrictions
  • • Character meets: Mickey, Princesses, Buzz Lightyear — at every park
  • • Fantasyland designed entirely for young children
  • • My Disney Experience keeps kids entertained in queues

🎢 Universal for Young Kids

  • • Seuss Landing is genuinely wonderful for kids under 8
  • • The Minion Land at Universal Studios is very kid-friendly
  • • But most signature rides have 48"–54" minimums
  • • Short kids will spend a lot of time watching others ride

🎒 Tweens & Teens: It's a Real Tie

This is where Universal starts to compete seriously. Disney's Galaxy's Edge, TRON, Tower of Terror, and Guardians of the Galaxy are legitimately excellent for older kids. But Universal's Velocicoaster (Jurassic World section), Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure™, and the new Epic Universe content hit differently for kids who've aged out of princess experiences. Many families in this age group do both.

Mark's Honest Take:

If your teens are Star Wars or Marvel fans → Disney has exclusive rights to those IP in Orlando and gives you the best experience. If your kids are Harry Potter fans → Universal is where that magic lives, period. Disney doesn't have it, and never will. Most DFW families with kids 10–16 do both parks on a single trip — it's very doable.

🎢 Thrill Rides: Universal Has the Edge

Pure thrill-ride quantity and intensity: Universal wins. Velocicoaster is one of the best roller coasters in the world. Disney's rides are incredible experiences, but Disney deliberately balances immersive storytelling with thrills rather than maximizing intensity. If your family's trip priority is roller coasters, Universal delivers more per hour.

🏰 Disney World Top Thrills

  • • TRON Lightcycle / Run
  • • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
  • • Avatar Flight of Passage
  • • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance
  • • Tower of Terror

🎢 Universal Top Thrills

  • • Velocicoaster (Jurassic World)
  • • Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure™ (Wizarding World)
  • Epic Universe (opened 2025 — Super Nintendo World, new Harry Potter land & more)
  • • Fast & Furious Hollywood Drift Coaster (coming summer 2027)

🌟 Epic Universe: The Game-Changer

Universal's brand new park — Epic Universe — opened in 2025 and is Universal's biggest investment in decades. It adds significant new lands including Wizarding World of Harry Potter (a third Harry Potter area), Super Nintendo World (home to Mario, Luigi, and the characters from Nintendo's iconic game franchises), and more. It meaningfully improves Universal's case for a multi-day visit.

With Epic Universe, Universal now warrants 4–5 days rather than the traditional 2–3 day visit. This makes the combination trip even more compelling — and also adds to Universal's cost competitiveness as you compare against Disney's 5–7 day timeline.

Bottom Line on Epic Universe:

If your family includes Harry Potter superfans or Nintendo/Mario fans, Epic Universe makes Universal more compelling than ever. It doesn't unseat Disney for young families, but it closes the gap significantly for families with kids 10 and older.

💰 Cost Comparison: Universal Is Cheaper Per Day

🏰 Disney World (Family of 4, 7 Days)

Hotel (Value, 6 nights)$1,200–$2,400
Tickets (7-day park hopper)$2,800–$4,000
Dining (mix QS + TS)$1,200–$2,000
Total (excl. flights)$5,200–$9,200

🎢 Universal (Family of 4, 3 Days)

Hotel (mid-tier, 3 nights)$600–$1,200
Tickets (3-day all parks)$800–$1,400
Dining$500–$800
Express Pass$0–$500
Total (excl. flights)$1,900–$3,900

Important context: Most DFW families flying to Orlando combine both parks on one trip — spending ~$8,000–$12,000 total for a 10-day trip covering Disney World (7 days) and Universal (3 days). This is actually very efficient when you factor in one set of flights, one car rental, and one round of hotel stress.

The Verdict: Who Should Go Where?

👶
Family with young kids (under 8): Disney World is the clear choice. Plan 5–7 Disney days. Universal as a 1-day add-on is optional but not essential.
🧒
Family with mixed ages (kids 6–15): Do both. Disney for 5–6 days, Universal for 2–3 days. Best of both worlds in one trip. Most popular itinerary from Rockwall families.
Teens / adults only — want maximum thrills: Universal is more efficient. Do Epic Universe + Islands of Adventure for 3 days, add Hollywood Studios at Disney for Galaxy's Edge.
Harry Potter superfans: Universal is non-negotiable. No version of Hogwarts or Diagon Alley exists at Disney World.
First-time Orlando trip: Prioritize Disney. It's the bucket-list experience for a reason — and it can't be done properly in less than 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Disney World or Universal better for young kids?
Disney World wins for young children (under 8). Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom have far more rides without height requirements, more character experiences, and a gentler overall atmosphere. Universal skews older — many of its best rides require riders to be at least 48 inches tall, which rules out many kids under 7.
Is Universal cheaper than Disney World?
Universal is generally less expensive — particularly for tickets and hotels — and can typically be done in 2–3 days (or 4–5 with Epic Universe). Disney requires 5–7 days to do it properly, which multiplies your hotel and dining costs. However, Disney offers better overall value for multi-day family trips because of the sheer volume of experiences included in the ticket price.
Should we do both Disney World and Universal on the same trip?
Yes — this is a very common itinerary and it works beautifully. The parks are about 20 minutes apart by car. Many DFW families do 5–7 days at Disney followed by 2–3 days at Universal on a single Orlando trip. I can help you build an itinerary that covers both efficiently.
